Phosphorescent’s new album, Here’s to Taking It Easy, is aptly titled. It is the least haunting of Matthew Houck’s work with the band since 2003. In fact much of the subject matter is straightforward, conventional, and dare I say lighthearted? Not entirely of course, Phosphorescent has an amazing high lonesome sound that chills. Although the difference between Pride (2007) and Here’s to Taking it Easy (2010) is noticeable, their live show was a great blend of their recent work and their older songs that made the crowd either sway dreamily or swing their hips and worship the God that is Country/Folk Rock. I’m a sucker for slide guitar.

Houck comes to put on a show. He looked like Bonnie Prince Billy’s cute drunk little brother. I don’t know about anyone else in there, but his cracking voice cracked my soul. He pushed emphasis on lyrics and did a whole lot of pointing. He did this thing a few times where he would grab the butt of his guitar and flip it down and just point up to the sky and sing, like Willie’s words were keeping him alive. His stage presence was mesmerizing. I watched some of the videos on their myspace before I went and he didn’t get as crazy as the “Lost Name” video, but he sure was fun to watch. He sat down on the edge of the stage next to a girl and sang Willie Nelson’s “It’s Not Supposed to be This Way” (…you’re supposed to know that I love you) while she turned beet red and he just loved it up.
The set list really delivered for me. “Nothing Was Stolen (Love Me Foolishly)” was the second song. “A Picture of Our Torn Up Praise” was fifth. They also played “It’s Hard to be Humble When You’re From Alabama” (after which he shouted GODAMMIT!), “Reasons to Quit”, “Too Sick to Pray”, “Los Angeles” and probably a few that I didn’t catch. They closed with the otherworldly “Wolves”.
It’s no wonder one of their 5 albums is a Willie Nelson tribute album titled To Willie (2009). Houck channeled Willie last night.

August 31st, 2010

By Ryan Brumley, KLSU Sports Reporter

After years of speculation and rumor, Roger Goodell announced Wednesday afternoon that he and the 32 NFL owners have considered eliminating two preseason games and expanded the regular season from 16 to 18 games. My initial response was sift and simple: FINALLY. Not only does this brilliant move expand the regular season, but it reduces the preseason to two games. In case you have never watched preseason football, the only two things that keep the average fan interested in the preseason the last 5 years has been a) when is Brett Favre Coming back, and b) which extremely important player to their team is out for the rest of the season because of a freak injury they suffered in a meaningless game. The expansion of the regular season will be a fantastic move for the owners, players, and most importantly, the fans.

Nevertheless, let’s consider some of the effects of an 18 game regular season. For the owners, the move is a no brainer. The motivation behind this drastic change is simple, More Money: more money for the owners, more money for the league, and possibly more money for the players (depending how well they negotiate the new CBA). In an era where most fans can watch the game from home on their giant HD televisions with multiple games on at once complete with live fantasy updates, four preseason games are a bore of epic proportions. The owners had to come up with more ways to keep fans in the stands and more meaningful football games were a great solution to that problem.

For players, the expansion could be a nightmare. Another 2 weeks of regular season play obviously leads to players being more vulnerable to injuries, shortened careers and a variety of other health concerns. With all the latest reports on concussions and other head injuries, this is not an issue to be taken lightly. In order to combat the player’s health concerned, another bye week should be added into the 18 game season. This would only expand the current preseason/season model by one game (Old plan: 4 preseason-16 regular season 1 bye 21 total New plan 2 preseason-18 regular season-2 bye 22 total) one increasing the season by one week. This bye week would give players another week for their bodies to recover, their injuries to heal, and their teams to improve. Players also will more than likely be able to increase a generous salary increase under this system, which will hopefully led to a better product on the field.

Most importantly, the proposed expansion benefits the fans more than anyone else. Many of expansions’ critics have complained that expanding football will be detrimental to other sports. Look, pushing the NFL season one more week into February. At this time in the sports universe, very little of major interest is going on. Expanding the Football season one more week is not going to lessen spring training, regular season NBA, or even conference games in NCAA basketball. All those things don’t really that much anyway. Things that do matter are three more weeks of regular season football to enjoy. More intriguing matching, more interesting story lines, more drama, more victory, more passion, more excitement, more of all the reason we as fans watch football in the first place. Football has always been a game of the people, and this is what the people want. So let there more games I say, let football follow in one of the most American of ideals, Bigger is Better.

The Melvins, to no one’s surprise, put on a show just as ear-ringingly loud, spectacular, and amazing as last year’s. The difference was that this time they had an opening band before their double-set. Oh, and they were in dresses. That’s right, dresses!

Coady Willis (drums) was sporting a dress made of a fine pizza-print fabric adorned with red-sequined shoulders. Dale Crover (drums) was wearing a simpler donut-print smock. Buzz Osborne (guitar) had his usual black robes, but this time they were adorned with a fabulous collar. And then there was Jared Warren (bass). He was wearing what looked like DIY Afrika Bambaataa/P-Funk suit of purple and gold (no LSU connection intended). Someone guessed that costumes were probably made for Bonaroo. I guessed that it probably didn’t matter because they were too busy looking like Awesomeness Itself.

All visuals aside, the Melvins were stunning. Their two drummers locked perfectly to make an incomparable rhythmic base off which the guitar and bass riffed. They didn’t stop and talk between songs. They just played. And played. Then they took a break, came back, and repeated.

As of this writing, I’ve seen the Melvins twice and can’t wait to make it thrice

During their 35-minute set, the group moved around the T-shaped runway stage and performed their hits “How Far Do You Wanna Go?” and “Wild At Heart.” Following Gloriana, new artist David Nail performed on stage. During Nail’s performance, rain and wind moved into Tiger Stadium, not fazing Nail a bit. Before belting out his current single “Turning Home”, Nail donned an LSU baseball jersey much to the delight of the crowd. Following Nail’s set, American Idol alum Kellie Pickler took the stage full of energy along with her trademark Southern charm. During her hour long set, Pickler performed such hits as “Best Days of Your Life”, “Red High Heels”, and the emotional ballad “I Wonder”. Following Pickler and starting into the nighttime was the powerhouse known as Keith Urban. During his two-hour set, the Aussie guitar dynamo wowed the crowd and his legion of female fans playing and moving around the runaway stage. While playing his usual array of hits, Urban also performed a decent cover of Steve Miller’s “The Joker”. It is debatable as to whether Urban’s two-hour performance could have possibly gotten the nod for best set of the night considering having to follow all-world superstar Taylor Swift.

Swift took the stage in awe of the 45,000 plus Tiger Stadium crowd. While Swift performed her catalog of chart-topping hits, some concert goers were none too pleased with some of her long-playing video montages.

Day two of the Superfest kicked off with country music rising star Justin Moore. Moore rocked out “Death Valley”, performed his chart-topping singles “Small-Town USA” and “Backwoods”. Moore also performed another interesting tune entitled, “I Can Kick Your Ass”. Following Moore was another upcoming country star, Jake Owen. Starting off his set, Owen performed his country debut single, “Yee Haw”. Performing other such hits, Owen definitely stole the heart of the crowd having a marriage proposal on stage and following it with a rendition of his hit, “Don’t Think I Can’t Love You”.

Following Owen was rockin’ country star Jason Aldean. Aldean rolled his way through such hits as “Hicktown”, “Amarillo Sky”, “Johnny Cash” and “She’s Country”. Country music super duo Brooks and Dunn followed Aldean, performing for over two hours. Superfest is one of the last dates for the ultra-successful duo as they will be calling it quits at the end of the year. They definitely had control of the crowd playing such hits such, “Brand New Man”, “Boot Scootin Boogie”, and “Only In America”. Finally to wrap up the 2010 Bayou Country Superfest, Kenny Chesney took the stage.

During his two-hour set, Chesney performed his catalog of hits. Chesney also took the time to invite Saints’ head coach Sean Payton on stage with Super Bowl trophy in tow as well as LSU football coach Les Miles. All in all, I give the Bayou Country

Superfest a BIG thumbs-up and, hope that it will continue to be held in Baton Rouge at Tiger Stadium.

Zap Mama-ReCreation

The bold cover of Zap Mama’s new album ReCreationshows the likeness of a lady immediately reminiscent of Erykah Badu circa Mama’s Gun. But to try to peg Zap Mama’s Marie Daulne as a Badu rip-off is a hasty mistake.

ReCreationis an adventure from track to track. The album starts with the breathy, slow introductory track “ReCreation”, only to break out into the huge, grinding, funky beats of “Vibrations”. “Singing Sisters” then supplies a bright a capella groove, followed by the latin “Hello To Mama”. The album continues the winding path from style to style, amazing from “Do You Wanna” to the very last track, “Chill Out”.

This album is the freshest to come out in quite some time. The year is a little over halfway over, but it might not be too soon to suspect that Zap Mama’s ReCreation is the best of the year.
